Isha L’Isha—Haifa Feminist Center has been on the forefront of the fight against trafficking in women in Israel and is one of the leading NGOs working in this area. Isha L'Isha has developed a large degree of professional experience and a reputation as a leading NGO in the field of trafficking in women. Isha L’Isha was a leading actor in advocacy work of NGOs pressuring the government to take steps to improve this situation, and in 2006 a comprehensive, anti-trafficking law passed a final vote in the Israeli Parliament, expanding the definition of trafficking and containing important protections for victims.
We work closely with Israeli government officials, police, officials in the ministries of Interior, Justice and Welfare, to educate about trafficking, advocate for better legislation that will protect the rights of victims and increase prosecution of traffickers, and to advocate for improved enforcement of existing laws. We work with the Israeli Foreign Ministry, educating and advocating for improved diligence regarding their anti-trafficking efforts. We also work with diplomatic staff in embassies of source countries in Israel, advocating for improved treatment for trafficking victims. Each year, we help hundreds of victims and educate thousands of people, including government officials, police, staff of NGOs, and various other groups involved in the treatment of victims, as well as the general public.
We have extensive experience in advocacy work to secure legal, medical, and human rights of trafficking victims, education campaigns to raise the public’s awareness of the abuses entailed in sexual enslavement, direct intervention, including rehabilitation of victims through empowerment courses and coordination of a safe return home. We also create networks and cooperate with local as well as international NGOs working in the field. Project volunteers regularly tour sex-industry areas and distribute flyers with our telephone support line and provide initial help to victims of trafficking and prostitution.
